Sailability Group
We have an active Sailability group, which is set up as an independent charity.

The group has its own Wayfarer dinghy, as well as access to other Club boats.

The group organises cruises and other events.

For more information, please contact the Sailability Group Secretary

Further Information
This Group was started some years ago by Chris Hague-Smith with the object of improving access to sailing for disabled and less enabled people. With its centre at Gravesend Sailing Club, it includes able bodied members who are committed to helping in any way they can (some of these hold RYA coaching qualifications): and some with various kinds of disability.

At present the group numbers 61 members, of which at least twelve have some physical difficulty which interferes with their full enjoyment of sailing.

The Group is properly constituted in a form recognised by the RYA, is administered by a Committee, and has several trustees.

During recent years, Roy Boughton has led the Group, acting as Chair and Fund Raiser, this latter function ably assisted by his wife Vera. He has, by inspired work, succeeded in making the group a registered Charity, getting the Club awarded 'Foundation Level Status' by RYA Sailability, generating local
interest, and claiming various grants resulting in the purchase of the Sailability Wayfarer, Freedom and supporting equipment. This boat may be used by members for a fee of £10 per day, payable to the Gravesend Sailability Group (not GSC). Any member wishing to sail Freedom should seek permission from either the Group Chairman or Group Secretary, giving reasonable notice.
Among other assets of the Group are a number of buoyancy aids, purchased with donations received from local businesses. Our main purpose, however, is to improve facilities at our host Club for less able people so that they too can enjoy sailing.

Several Fun Sails have been organised by the Sailability group, and supported by club members. Such events are included in the annual GSC sailing calendar.

GSC and the Sailability Group.
Gravesend Sailing Club hosts most of the activities of the Group; most (but not all) members are also Club Members. We use GSC facilities, and therefore the non-club members who use them are limited by visitor rules - six occasions, after which they are expected to apply for Club membership.
A quid pro quo is that some of the proposed improvements for less enabled members in the Group might indeed assist the others.
